Reflecting on World Alzheimer’s Month.

As September draws to a close, we reflect on the changing seasons — the long summer days give way to crisp autumn mornings, and there’s a quiet shift in the air as we begin looking ahead to the festive months. It’s a natural time for reflection, both on the months behind us and on the ones to come.

What many may not know is that September is also World Alzheimer’s Month, with September 21st marked as World Alzheimer’s Day — a time dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia, and the profound impact they have on individuals, families, and entire communities.

This year, the global theme for World Alzheimer’s Month 2025 was ‘Never too early, never too late’ — a powerful reminder of the importance of early intervention, proactive care, and consistent support. A timely diagnosis and ongoing, respectful care can make a significant difference to the quality of life for people living with Dementia and those who care for them.

In the UK today, around 982,000 people are living with Dementia — with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for about two-thirds of those cases. Alzheimer’s is a progressive condition that begins long before symptoms appear. Over time, proteins build up in the brain and damage the connections between neurons, leading to widespread brain cell death.

As the disease progresses, it affects many aspects of daily life, including:

  • Memory loss

  • Difficulty with language and understanding

  • Poor judgment and confusion

  • Changes in personality or mood

  • Anxiety, depression, and even hallucinations

For families and loved ones, the emotional toll can be just as significant. Alzheimer’s is often referred to as “the long goodbye” — a slow, painful journey of watching someone you love change in ways that are difficult to understand or process. Carers can feel overwhelmed and isolated, often unsure of where to turn for support or reluctant to ask for help.

Here at Evergreen Care Trust, we walk alongside families facing these challenges every day. Through our Home Support services, we provide both practical help and compassionate companionship — whether we’re supporting someone living with Dementia directly or giving carers the space to take a much-needed break and focus on their own wellbeing.

We offer:

  • Meaningful engagement during home visits

  • Respectful and dignified care to help Members stay as independent as possible

  • Monitoring of changing needs, with the flexibility to adjust care as required

We believe that no one should feel alone on this journey.

Thankfully, there is local support available for anyone affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Dementia Support South Lincs runs a variety of inclusive activities such as singing groups, tai chi sessions, gardening clubs, and art workshops — all designed to encourage connection and joy.

The Alzheimer’s Society also offers guidance, information, and signposting to further resources.

As World Alzheimer’s Month comes to a close, we want to encourage anyone who may be struggling — whether you are living with the condition or supporting someone who is — to reach out. It is never too early, and it is never too late to ask for help, seek advice, and access the support you need.

Just as the seasons change, so do our needs — and with the right care, compassion and community, no one needs to face Dementia alone.
