Pedalling for a Greener Future: Robin & Roland’s 280‑Mile Challenge

This summer, two of Evergreen Care Trust’s long‑standing supporters — Robin Morrison (81) and Roland Higgins (73) — took on an extraordinary challenge. Over seven days, they cycled and triked an impressive 280 miles across Lincolnshire and Rutland, raising £2,815 for Greening Evergreen, our project to install solar panels and reduce long‑term energy costs at our offices.

Setting off from Stamford, Robin and Roland travelled routes that took them past some of the region’s most loved landmarks, including Wymondham Windmill, Nene Valley Railway, Barnsdale Gardens, and Waterside Garden Centre. Every mile brought them closer to their fundraising goal and closer to a more sustainable future for Evergreen.

Roland, a Trustee and dedicated volunteer, spoke about why the project matters:

“Everybody knows how expensive electricity costs are. Every pound we can save on energy is another pound Evergreen can spend supporting older people in the Stamford area.”

Robin, who has volunteered with Evergreen for many years, reflected on the importance of community as we grow older:

“Upon reaching my 81st birthday, I was reminded that we are arriving at the stage in our lives when we may need the support of others. Evergreen services are a vital social care link for people in the Stamford area, especially when help is needed beyond the circle of friends and family.”

Roland’s volunteering also includes befriending — supporting John, with whom he shared a deep love of music. Their regular afternoons out for tea and cake became a treasured part of the week.

“Loneliness and social isolation are major challenges for the older population, and Evergreen supports 43 people with befrienders,” Roland said. “John introduced me to so much music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I still listen to playlists he inspired.”

At Evergreen, our commitment to vulnerable older people is powered by more than 100 volunteers who offer companionship, practical help, and community connection.

“We are here to help you through life‑changing challenges,” the charity says. “We aim to ensure you have support at home and in the community when you need it most.”

The Greening Evergreen project is expected to save £2,000 every year, totalling £40,000 over the 20‑year lifetime of the solar panels. These savings will be reinvested into volunteer training, social activities, and essential services for older people across Stamford.
