A Rewarding DofE Volunteering Experience At Evergreen Care Trust

Volunteering can be one of the most meaningful parts of completing a DofE award, offering the chance to give back while developing valuable life skills. At Evergreen Care Trust, students have the opportunity to do exactly that—make a real difference in their community while growing in confidence and experience.

Tanya Shares Her Experience

“I recently volunteered at Evergreen Care Trust as part of my DofE award and had a positive and rewarding experience. From the moment I started, I felt welcomed and supported by the staff, which made it easy to get involved and build confidence. I especially enjoyed baking for the ‘Friends Together Group,’ and I could see the real impact it had on the community, which made it even more motivating.

I also developed skills such as organisation and responsibility, all while enjoying the experience. Overall, volunteering there was fulfilling, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to complete their DofE award.”

Flexible Volunteering That Fits Around You

One of the strengths of volunteering with Evergreen is the range of weekend and evening-friendly opportunities available. These flexible options allow DofE students to contribute meaningfully—even outside of office hours—while supporting older people and encouraging intergenerational connection.

Volunteering Opportunities Outside Office Hours

There are many ways students can get involved:

Community-Focused Support:

Helping with leaflet drops, distributing posters, litter picking, supporting light gardening tasks for older residents, or delivering seasonal items like cards and wellbeing packs.

Creative & Communication Projects:

Writing letters to isolated individuals, creating handmade gifts, designing posters or social media graphics, and recording positive messages or readings to share digitally.

Fundraising & Awareness:

Organising small fundraisers such as bake sales or sponsored walks, raising awareness about important issues like loneliness, or helping to gather raffle prizes from local businesses.

Independent Support Tasks:

Preparing resource packs, sorting donated items, maintaining noticeboards, or creating uplifting music playlists for activity groups.

Digital & Tech Support:

Producing simple “how-to” guides for older people, testing website accessibility, or editing short videos to support Evergreen’s work.

Why It Works

These activities are designed to be safe, flexible, and easy to complete independently, making them ideal for young volunteers. They help build confidence, initiative, and community awareness, while also creating a meaningful impact—often without needing face-to-face contact.

Most importantly, they support Evergreen’s mission in practical and thoughtful ways, ensuring that even small contributions can make a big difference.
