Why Volunteer with Evergreen?

make a difference outdoors

The Garden Companion role exists to offer light practical help and friendly social interaction to older people who have no other support to maintain and enjoy their gardens. This role focuses on gentle gardening using basic manual tools and is not intended to replace situations where a paid gardening service is needed. It’s about sharing a love of gardening, offering companionship, and providing a little practical assistance that helps someone continue to take pride in their outdoor space. Support may be offered as a one‑off visit or through occasional sessions, depending on the needs of the resident and your availability.

At The Evergreen Care Trust we rely on a team of dedicated volunteers who help deliver services across the local community so that older members of our community are supported and cared for. Not only is volunteering a great way to help others, it's also a way of meeting new people, developing new skills and being a part of a warm and supportive community. Whether you can give a little time or a lot, we'd love to hear from you!

  • Build rewarding friendships

  • Make a real impact on someone's life

Garden Fresh Produce

role requirements

Garden Companions offer light gardening support such as watering plants, maintaining hanging baskets, and planting flowers or shrubs, while also engaging sociably with the older people we support. Volunteers follow all Health & Safety guidance, including not using power tools, electric tools or lawnmowers, and wearing protective clothing when required. Any concerns or questions are reported to the Volunteer Services Manager, and confidentiality and the values of the Evergreen Care Trust are upheld at all times.

No formal qualifications are needed just a keen interest for gardening.

Gardening

time requirements

All volunteers complete mandatory online safeguarding training and receive clear guidance on the role to help them feel confident and supported.

Hours are flexible with often one - two hours a week during spring and summer. Gardening can take place at members homes or join our gardening club at our office where volunteers meet on a regular basis to build a new space for our members to enjoy.

how to apply?

This is an opportunity for volunteers with ‘green fingers’ to make the space their own. Ideally, we would have two or more volunteers working as a team.
