Chaplaincy and listening

Why Volunteer with Evergreen?

A Listening Ear When It Matters Most

The Evergreen Chaplaincy & Listening Service offers a non-judgmental listening ear and or pastoral support for those within our team, both staff and volunteers as well as our members (service users) and their families. Referrals can be from Health & care professionals, family or self referrals.

Candle In Hands

role requirements

We offer this service as part of our whole‑person approach to care, recognising the importance of spiritual support and attentive listening, especially when someone is distressed or in crisis. The role includes providing gentle pastoral care, supporting the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of those we serve, and taking a lead in coordinating the Spiritual Care Team so that no one feels overloaded. You’ll also join our monthly All Leads meeting on the first Monday of each month (excluding public holidays), where service leads come together to encourage one another, strengthen communication and deepen understanding across the organisation. Evergreen is also privileged to have Dr Rev. Rhona Knight as Spiritual Advisor, offering guidance and support to the team.

We’re looking for someone with a natural gifting for pastoral care — someone compassionate, grounded, and able to listen well. If you have a couple of hours each week to offer and feel called to support others in this way, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please also feel free to share this opportunity with anyone you think might be a good fit for the role.

hours and training

All volunteers involved in chaplaincy and pastoral support complete mandatory safeguarding training and must hold an enhanced DBS check to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those we serve. The role typically involves a few hours each week coordinating chaplaincy volunteers, organising rotas and offering pastoral support to both team members and the people they visit. This helps ensure the service runs smoothly, volunteers feel cared for, and those in need receive thoughtful, compassionate spiritual support.

At The Evergreen Care Trust we rely on a team of dedicated volunteers who help deliver services across the local community so that older members of our community are supported and cared for. Not only is volunteering a great way to help others, it's also a way of meeting new people, developing new skills and being a part of a warm and supportive community. Whether you can give a little time or a lot, we'd love to hear from you!
