Why Volunteer with Evergreen?
What is BEFRIENDING?
The purpose of this role is to provide a Befriendee (a service user or member who needs social engagement, is lonely or bereaved) with an opportunity to develop a wholesome and mutually caring relationship with a willing partner (Befriender). The Trust believes that honest friendships are a positive way of establishing social value and support for those who may, for any number of reasons, find themselves isolated, alone, or lonely.
At The Evergreen Care Trust we rely on a team of dedicated volunteers who help deliver services across the local community so that older members of our community are supported and cared for. Not only is volunteering a great way to help others, it's also a way of meeting new people, developing new skills and being a part of a warm and supportive community. Whether you can give a little time or a lot, we'd love to hear from you!

Role requirements
As a Befriender, you’ll play an important role in supporting an older person with companionship, conversation and a reliable point of connection. This includes keeping all befriendee information, files and key‑safe codes stored safely, maintaining honest and accurate records, and upholding clear boundaries so the support you offer stays appropriate to the Befriending role. You’ll raise any concerns with the Befriender Lead, maintain confidentiality at all times unless given explicit permission to share information, and always uphold the values of the Evergreen Care Trust.

No formal qualifications are required. What matters most is having the right personal qualities: being friendly, caring, honest, open and a good listener, as well as reliable and observant. Access to your own transport can be helpful but isn’t essential — what truly makes a difference is your commitment to offering consistent, compassionate companionship.

Hours & training
All befrienders complete mandatory online safeguarding training, followed by an introduction session to the role and the opportunity to shadow an experienced Befriender. You’ll receive regular updates and ongoing support from the Befriender Team, along with invitations to attend relevant training courses as they become available.
The time commitment is usually one to two hours per week, arranged at a time that suits both you and your befriendee. Visits can take place in the person’s home, in a local community space such as a café or garden centre, or even over the phone — whatever feels most comfortable and appropriate for both of you.
