Volunteer Schools
What is Volunteer Schools?
The purpose of this role is to deliver hot meals directly to the homes of clients in Stamford, offering not only a nutritious lunch but also caring social interaction. Working in partnership with Second Helpings, Evergreen volunteers support people who are housebound, socially isolated or vulnerable, and who benefit from both a wholesome meal and the reassurance of seeing a regular friendly face. Together, Evergreen and Second Helpings launched SHELS (Second Helpings Evergreen Lunch Support) in November 2023. This weekly service brings a freshly prepared hot meal straight to the doorstep of residents in Stamford or Ryhall — a simple, comforting way to ensure someone has something warm and nourishing to enjoy, especially on days when cooking may feel difficult.

Role requirements
Volunteer drivers must have access to a roadworthy, insured vehicle with valid MOT, tax and a full driving licence, and should notify their insurance provider that they are undertaking volunteer deliveries. Drivers need to feel confident following a delivery route and engaging positively with the people they support, offering a friendly, kind and compassionate presence at the doorstep. Volunteers are expected to follow all current health and safety protocols for meal delivery, wear their Evergreen ID badge so clients can easily recognise them, and keep clear records of each journey, including mileage, date, time and purpose. Any concerns should be reported to the Volunteer Services Manager or the Delivery Service Lead Volunteer. Above all, volunteers work within Evergreen’s values, representing the charity in a professional, polite and caring manner as part of a supportive team.

time requirements
Volunteers always travel in pairs, with new volunteers shadowing experienced drivers until they feel confident in the role. Deliveries run on a rota system, with each session taking place every Friday from 11:30am to 1:00pm.
Mileage can be reimbursed, ensuring volunteers are never out of pocket for their travel.
